Naming Your Guitar

Some think naming their guitar is stupid, some say its essential, others still think its a rite of passage. If you haven't thought about naming it or want to know how to go about naming it then this is the tip for you.

The general consensus is this: name your guitar after a woman, extra bonus points if it's a woman who done you wrong, man. This is a tradition carried over from the days of blues and singing about trains and other depressing non living things.

Most people say you should stay away from funny or clever names but you don't have to follow everything you hear, do what you wanna do. I named my guitar Daffy because that's the name I liked.

Reasons to name your guitar?

  • It creates a special bond. Making music is a personal thing to do and so as weird as it sounds, having a bond with the instrument would probably help.
  • It feels right to call something that you spend so much time with by a name. It's just like buying a car, you spend so much time with this thing that you actually develop a relationship with it. I think I'm gonna cry.
  • Call it something rather than just 'my Gibson'.
  • If you start to develop a collection it will be easier to differentiate.

Jimi loves his guitar a whole bunch.

Famous people have named their guitars too. Jimi Hendrix named his guitar Betty Mae. Other famous names are Blackie, that's Eric Claptons name for his axe. Also there's 'Frankensrat', the name Eddie Van Halen used for his guitar.
