The Best First Guitar Lesson For Free

So in my first post to this blog I talked about how early victories were the key to keeping momentum when learning a new instrument. This first lesson is based on that idea. It's going to be an easy lesson to learn but the benefits will be far greater than the work you have to put in. Rather than start with chords and notes and progressions etc, its good to keep the momentum and start with a success. And here's how we do it:

The Four Most Used Chords in Contemporary Songs

All you have to do is learn FOUR CHORDS that are used in SO many pop songs from SO many artists in SO many time periods. Okay so it still requires that you put the time into learning these chords and strumming and all else but right now lets get you playing something; that way when people ask you to play something you can actually play something.

There are plenty of people who are aware of these chords and lots of people have made parodies to illustrate just how many songs use them. One of the best parodies is by the Axis Of Awesome. Here's the music video they did:

This is their live performance from 2009 where they explain a little about the chords:

So I'm Going to Learn FOUR CHORDS and That's It?

No. We still have to go through chords ans notes and lots and lots more stuff. This will be a good start though. You can actually learn to play something in the mean time and get some practice and song play under your belt. Still not convinced that's a good idea? Well this guy, Josh Kaufman calls himself a skill acquisition expert. That means he is an expert at learning new skills. He actually tried a method where he learned the Ukulele (baby cousin to the guitar) in 20 hours. How? well he focused on the FOUR CHORDS he needed to know to do the most playing with... These FOUR CHORDS.

If you want to check his method here it is, otherwise it's pretty much what I have said here already.

Next post will be the four chords and how to play them.

(After we master those chords we can move up to the intermediate version of the same thing but this time its 8 chords. It's almost the same thing but with a little extra in the middle bits. Also songs used by So many artists. A great guitar parody of those FOUR CHORDS was done by comedian Rob Paravonian)
